The Oyut deposit, part of the Oyu Tolgoi group of deposits, is being mined using open-pit methods. At the open-pit mine, a combination of excavator–haul truck and loader–haul truck technology is used to mine in 15-meter-high benches.

The benches are connected by 40-meter-wide ramp roads, through which 290-tonne capacity haul trucks transport overburden and ore separately to the primary crusher or waste dumps. Hydraulic and rope shovels (Bucyrus RH 340B, 495HR) and 290-tonne Komatsu 930E-4SE haul trucks are used for mining operations. Since August 2012, 28 haul trucks have been operating.
